Features of Elegant Wedding Invitations

When it comes to creating an invitation that exudes elegance, it all comes down to three things: typography, paper, and design elements. These features are the bread and butter of any wedding invitation, but we make particular, intentional choices when designing with elegance in mind.

Typography

The typography should be classic and traditional—nothing that wouldn’t have appeared on your grandmother’s wedding invitations. It could be all calligraphy, as seen in our Daphne Collection, or a mix of calligraphy and easy-to-read serif fonts, like our Jane Collection. There should be plenty of white space to avoid a cluttered feel, and a clear hierarchy of the fonts used.

Paper

This isn’t the time for smooth photo paper. To ensure that your wedding invitation not only looks but also feels elegant, you’ll want high-quality, heavyweight paper, ideally with a bit of texture for that handmade feel. My standard paper is 120 lb., and my upgraded double-thick option is 220 lb. But if you're craving something unique, our standard paper isn't your only option! We also offer the option to upgrade to felted or colored paper.

Design Elements

This is where personal taste and the style and season of the wedding come into play. Elegant wedding invitations aren’t one-size-fits-all!

With that said, upgrading from digital printing to letterpress or foil stamping introduces a tactile element that enhances the overall experience of your suite. Graphic elements should be soft and sophisticated: think delicate florals, clean-cut borders, and vintage-inspired crests. As for colors, they should lean monochromatic. You might opt for multiple shades of the same color or a limited palette of different colors. Still, everything should feel cohesive, not loud.

How to Enhance the Elegance of Your Suite

Maybe you’ve already found your favorite design, or discovered it from among the collections listed above. If you want to dial up the elegant factor even further, this is how we suggest doing it:

Upgrade to Letterpress Printing: An enhancement you won’t just see, but feel. The delicate impressions of letterpress printing, created by hand, embody luxury and refinement.

Add an Envelope Liner and/or Vellum Wrap: These add-ons make opening your suite a memorable experience, from the pop of playful florals on the envelope liner to the sheer overlay effect created by the vellum wrap.

Add a Die-Cut Shape: You aren’t boxed into a rectangular invitation if you want an elegant look (no pun intended!). In fact, die-cut shapes like ovals and arches are more popular than ever, and can give your suite a custom-designed feel.

Upgrade to Double-Thick Paper: If your budget is tight and the enhancements listed above aren’t an option, upgrading to double-thick paper will give you the biggest bang for your buck.
